When we launched our leadership profile series featuring Deb Casurella last month, we did so with the intention of spotlighting the people behind our brand. Why? Because consumers are more likely to trust a company when they know more about the team behind the brand. This week, we are cultivating some thoughts and insight on MyAgData and the ag industry in general from Jeremy Wilson, our Project Manager and Co-Founder. We sat down recently with Jeremy and harvested some questions about his career as a farmer and his experience and passion for agriculture.
Here is some information about Jeremy’s life in the office and on the farm.
What made you want to work in the agriculture industry?
I grew up on my family’s farm, so all I have really known my entire life is agriculture/farming. I was fortunate to start working in the Precision Ag industry near its inception and have enjoyed “growing up” with the industry. I am passionate about identifying new ways to advance technology to increase profitability, reduce risk or increase sustainability for the American farmer.
Have you faced any challenges in the ag industry and if so, how did you overcome them?
The biggest challenge I have faced throughout my career is not having formal education in engineering or software development. Early in my career, I worked with technology every day and with engineers to bring showcase the value of technology to farmers. The engineers that I worked alongside patiently explained all of the technical aspects that I would have learned in college. Then, when MyAgData started to develop software, the programmers continually explained the software development process to me: a guy who just wanted the software to do this or that. I overcame both of these challenges by working with teams of people who were willing to teach me, and by searching the Internet for websites that explained many of the technical concepts taught at the college level.
What accomplishment are you most proud of on your resume?
No accomplishment on my resume was completed by me alone. My accomplishments became possible by working alongside a great team of people with a passion to accomplish goals and tasks. As I look back through my career, I’m humbled by the amazing groups of people that have worked together to create growth solutions for farmers and service providers.
Why do you believe it’s important to simplify the acreage reporting process for farmers, crop insurance agents, and ag service providers?
Reporting is a requirement for growers every year. Although farmers enjoy planting crops, working the land or harvesting their crops, our app provides farmers with the ability to complete their reporting and eliminate the paperwork. The amount of time needed to complete crop insurance and FSA reporting varies from farm to farm, but in almost every case, MyAgData will reduce the time invested in the reporting process.
What do you think sets MyAgData apart from other ag data companies?
Our only aspiration is to be the very best reporting tool on the market today. We are not a big data solution. We are not a complete Farm Management Information System (FMIS). But, we are developing partnerships with people and companies that offer other software solutions. This enables growers to find more value in the data in their systems. From growers with advanced technology skills to those with no technology on their farm, everyone can find value in using MyAgData.
What are your top three personal values?
Honestly, respect and passion. These are core values in the agriculture industry too.
Do you have a favorite quote or philosophy on life?
My philosophy in life is: Never give up.
I have two favorite quotes that inspire me personally and professionally:
“You have to be burning with an idea, or a problem, or a wrong that you want to right. If you’re not passionate enough from the start, you’ll never stick it out.” – Steve Jobs
“Find a job you love and you will never work a day in your life.” – Orion Samuelson, Farm Broadcaster, WGN
If you could change something in the ag industry, what would it be and why?
The one thing that I would like to change in our industry is the ability to better share data across multiple systems. The industry is moving in the right direction to allow farmers and trusted service providers to share data accurately and efficiently. As an industry, we still have some work to be completed to allow seamless data interoperability.
What advice would you give to a potential client who is seeking the right cloud-based data system to streamline their acreage reporting needs?
Start by researching solutions that are currently available on the market. Once the research is complete, most clients will find that few solutions today compare to what MyAgData has worked tirelessly to develop for farmers at all levels of the technology curve.
