It’s hard to believe that we’re already well into August. Our parents used to say that time flies when you are having fun, but I’m not sure everyone would agree that this has been a fun-filled summer.

However, it’s certainly been another growing season to remember. Some early planting, some late plant, some droughts, even some bumper crops. For some #Harvest18 has already begun, for others it’s still days or even weeks away. And who will ever forget the uncertain commodity prices we have seen the past few months too!

Speaking of harvest, have you taken a few minutes to calibrate one of the most powerful tools in your combine, the yield monitor? Or do you just use it as it came out of the box?

The data your yield monitor collects is such a valuable asset that it deserves a few minutes of tinkering to make it as accurate as possible. You’ll be able to use the information gleaned from it to inform next year’s discussion about seed purchases, crop nutrition or even in-season water or fungicide application. Let’s face it, on average you get ability to collect 40 scorecards in your life time to understand how discussions you made throughout the growing season impacted yield! Therefore isn’t it important to make this accurate as possible?

But don’t take our word for it. If you’d like some additional information from a couple experts in the…ahem…field, check out some in-field monitor tips from Nebraska’s Dr. Joe Luck, and how yield monitors can be “trained” to deliver accurate estimates from Purdue’s Dr. Bob Nielsen. Remember, as Nielsen notes, that “the bottom line is that extra care and attention to details are important when calibrating yield monitors.”
